Delhi Airport’s General Aviation Terminal gets India’s first dedicated MRO Hangars

By Staff Correspondent

Almost one-and-half years after India’s first dedicated General Aviation terminal got operational in the national capital, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a GMR Infrastructure Ltd-led consortium, through its FBO-MRO Concessionaires, has constructed two state-of-the-art maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hangars at the GA Terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Fully operational since April 2022, these hangars serve the business jets and general aviation (GA) aircraft. Each hangar has approximately 2,000 sq mtr floor space and it can accommodate 6 to 8 mid-size general aviation aircraft.

Two concessionaires – Bird Execujet Airport Services Private Limited and Indamer MJets Airport Services Private Limited – operate the GA terminal, which got inaugurated in September 2020. These FBO-MRO operators exclusively take care of all the requirements of passengers travelling by private aircraft/ chartered flights and also provide maintenance of Business jets/General Aviation flights. At present, the GA terminal handles an average of 36-38 ATMs per day.

The new hangars will not only help save time and money for the operators but also reduce environmental pollution to a large extent. Earlier GA aircraft and business jets had to burn fuel while travelling an 8-10 km stretch to undergo maintenance at hangars near T1. These aircraft also had to cross one active runway while reaching the old hangers near T1 often leading to wastage of time and fuel. The old hangers at T1 have already been dismantled.

“DIAL is the pioneer in building world-class airport infrastructure. The dedicated General Aviation facility – GA Terminal, and aircraft parking bays – was the first of its kind in India. This facility has put India at par with some of the world’s best airports. Moving forward, we have developed dedicated MRO hangars with world-class facilities near the GA terminal, which also are the first in the country. This facility not only benefits the aircraft operators but also helps Delhi Airport in achieving its environmental sustainability goals,” CEO-DIAL, Mr. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said.

These hangars also have approx. 4,600 sq mt of the front maintenance holding area, which is available to accommodate aircraft needing minor maintenance. Additionally, these hangars are equipped with necessary workshops such as battery-shop, aviation workshops, general workshops, etc., which are essential to support aircraft maintenance-related works under one roof. There is also provision for dedicated separate stores, Darkroom, Quarantine room, Bonded Stores and Petroleum, Oil & Lubricants (POL) Room, etc.

One of these hangars has authorized channel partners and service centres for India and the sub-continent of the world’s renowned MRO companies, Textron and Honeywell.

These hangars have separate office buildings (G+2) with an approximate built-up area of 2,000 sq mtr to meet the administrative/operations-related requirements of FBO, MRO, and Non-Schedule Operator Permit (NSOP) operators.

One of the hangars is equipped with a lounge facility to facilitate the transit crew.

Both the hangars have received statutory approvals for performing aircraft maintenance activity from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
