GE Aerospace recently announced a significant achievement for its GEnx commercial aviation engine family: the completion of two million flight hours with airlines in South Asia. The GEnx engine, which made its regional debut in 2012, has become the preferred choice for notable airlines such as Air India, Vistara, and Biman Bangladesh, with a total of 90 engines currently in operation. The partnership between GE Aerospace and South Asian airlines has proven successful, particularly as Air India embarks on an expansion plan that involves the acquisition of 20 new wide-body aircraft powered by 40 GEnx engines. Nipun Aggarwal, Air India’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed confidence in the GEnx engine, citing its reliability, efficiency, and sustainability as pivotal to their operational efficiency as they increase their fleet size.
Significantly, the GEnx engine stands out not only for its performance but also for its commitment to sustainability. It powers Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and 747-8, boasting advancements that notably reduce operating costs and environmental impacts. The GEnx engine is engineered to be 15% more fuel-efficient and to emit up to 15% less CO2 compared to its predecessor, the CF6 engine. Furthermore, its innovative twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor achieves a remarkable reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, exceeding current regulatory limits by up to 60%.
In support of the region’s commitment to sustainable aviation practices, GE Aerospace has successfully implemented various innovative technologies and maintenance solutions, including the 360 Foam Wash system. This advanced cleaning technique enhances engine performance by removing dirt and debris, ultimately improving fuel efficiency and extending maintenance intervals.
