In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s defence capabilities, Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited have announced a strategic agreement focused on the C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlifter. This partnership not only underscores both organizations’ commitment to enhancing India’s aerospace sector but also reflects the deepening strategic ties between India and the United States.
The agreement encompasses multiple initiatives aimed at supporting the Indian Air Force (IAF) and advancing the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. Notably, it includes the establishment of a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India. This facility is poised to service the IAF’s current fleet of C-130Js and to accommodate maintenance for overseas Super Hercules operators. Moreover, the plan to expand C-130J manufacturing and assembly in India, contingent upon necessary approvals, signifies a pivotal move towards increasing domestic defence production capacity.
Lockheed Martin will continue to manufacture C-130Js at its renowned facility in Marietta, Georgia while aiming to establish additional production capabilities in India once the MTA contract is awarded. This dual approach reinforces Lockheed Martin’s longstanding commitment to the U.S. military and supports India’s aspirations for self-reliance in defence.
Tata Advanced Systems’ Chief Executive Officer, Sukaran Singh, articulated the importance of this collaboration, emphasizing that it marks Tata’s entry into the MRO space for large aircraft in India. Furthermore, this partnership enhances the existing relationship between the two companies, which began with the establishment of Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Ltd. (TLMAL) in 2010. TLMAL has played a crucial role as the global single-source provider of C-130J empennages, a testament to the successful implementation of the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative.
Rod McLean, vice president at Lockheed Martin, acknowledged the C-130J’s reputation as the “world’s workhorse” and highlighted the significance of this agreement in fostering a self-reliant Indian aerospace sector. The synergy between Lockheed Martin and Indian industry partners illustrates a robust international supply chain that supports both local and global operational needs.
As the IAF seeks to acquire up to 80 medium transport aircraft, the collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems positions the C-130J-30 Super Hercules as a viable candidate to meet its requirements. The efforts by both companies not only promise to enhance India’s military infrastructure but also serve to solidify the strategic partnership between the U.S. and India in defence and aerospace.

With significant fuel savings, the C-130J-30 minimizes its carbon footprint, positioning itself as a more environmentally friendly choice compared to other medium-sized jet airlifters. Since the Indian Air Force took delivery of its first C-130J-30 in 2011, the aircraft has showcased remarkable versatility and performance. Indian defence crews have executed complex operations, ranging from landings at the highest airfields to conducting critical nighttime missions during adverse weather conditions.
As a continuously evolving platform, the C-130J Super Hercules has set benchmarks in tactical airlift operations. With a global fleet comprising over 545 aircraft across 27 operators in 23 nations, it boasts over three million flight hours supporting diverse mission profiles, including humanitarian aid, peacekeeping, and special operations. This wealth of operational experience equips the C-130J with invaluable insights, enhancing its readiness to address future challenges in military and humanitarian contexts.
