The appointment of Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) marks a significant moment for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This promotion, effective October 31, 2026, moves Air Marshal Dixit, previously Vice Chief of the Air Staff, into the IAF’s highest leadership post, taking over from Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh upon his superannuation. Born on December 9, 1966, Air Marshal Dixit began his journey in the IAF on December 6, 1986, when he was commissioned into the fighter stream. His nearly four-decade-long career has been characterized by extensive operational experience, strategic leadership roles, and a profound dedication to service. Prior to his elevation to CAS, he held pivotal positions such as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Air Command. These roles have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of India’s defence architecture and the intricate challenges facing its air power.
Air Marshal Dixit has a strong academic and professional foundation. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Command & Staff College Bangladesh, and the National Defence College, he possesses a well-rounded educational background crucial for strategic thinking and leadership in modern warfare. His flying career is particularly distinguished, boasting over 3500 hours of flight time across a diverse array of aircraft, including the Mirage-2000, various MiG variants, Kiran, Jaguar, IL-78, Hawk, and Tejas. This extensive experience as an Experimental Test Pilot and a Qualified Flying Instructor highlights his deep technical expertise and hands-on understanding of aerial combat and flight operations. His active participation in critical operations and exercises such as Op-Safed Sagar, Op-Rakshak, and Op-Sindoor further underscores his commitment and bravery in the face of national security challenges.
Throughout his illustrious career, Air Marshal Dixit has held numerous significant field and staff appointments that have demonstrably enhanced the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities. His command of a frontline fighter air base in the Western Sector and a premier fighter training base in the Southern Sector showcases his leadership at both operational and developmental levels. These roles are crucial for maintaining the IAF’s combat readiness and ensuring the continuous training of its personnel.
Air Marshal Dixit’s exemplary service has been recognized through a series of prestigious awards. He was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal in 2006, the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2011, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2023, and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026. These accolades reflect his distinguished service, unwavering dedication, and significant contributions to the Indian Air Force.
