Embraer–Mahindra Partnership Puts Nagpur In Focus for C-390 Assembly & India’s Aerospace Ambitions

Staff Correspondent

The collaboration between Embraer and Mahindra Group marks a significant stride towards bolstering India’s aerospace and defence capabilities, particularly concerning the potential localization of the C-390 Millennium transport aircraft’s manufacturing and assembly. This strategic partnership, initiated through a Memorandum of Understanding in February 2024 and solidified by a Strategic Cooperation Agreement in October 2025, underscores a shared commitment to advancing India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) objectives.

Identifying Nagpur as the prospective site for a Final Assembly Line for the C-390 Millennium is a pivotal development in this endeavour. This decision reflects careful consideration and preparatory discussions between Embraer, Mahindra, and the Government of Maharashtra. The proposed facility in Nagpur is envisioned as a state-of-the-art hub that would not only facilitate local assembly but also integrate crucial industrial know-how, including aircraft assembly, system integration, manufacturing engineering, and local supply chain development. This approach aligns seamlessly with India’s broader vision of fostering an indigenous aerospace ecosystem.

Both Embraer and Mahindra have articulated their enthusiasm for this deepening partnership. Bosco da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, emphasised the importance of building a robust, long-term aerospace ecosystem in India, highlighting support from the Government of Maharashtra. Similarly, Vinod Sahay, Member of the Group Executive Board at Mahindra Group, reiterated Mahindra’s commitment to creating globally competitive manufacturing and technology capabilities within India. He specifically acknowledged the Government of Maharashtra’s proactive support in allotting land in Nagpur and assisting with related requirements.

It is crucial to note that the realization of these ambitious plans is contingent upon the selection of the C-390 Millennium for the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. Should the C-390 Millennium be chosen, the partnership intends to progressively integrate Indian aerospace companies into its ecosystem. This integration would encompass manufacturing, aftermarket services, training, and lifecycle support, further solidifying India’s position in the global aerospace industry. The forward-looking approach also includes plans to establish a C-390 Millennium Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capability in India, further enhancing the country’s self-reliance in this critical sector.

The C-390 Millennium: A New Era of Strategic Collaboration in Aerospace

The C-390 Millennium multi-mission military transport aircraft stands as a testament to modern aerospace engineering, designed to address a diverse range of operational requirements. Its impressive capabilities span troop and cargo transport, airdrop operations, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian missions. With a substantial payload capacity of up to 26 tonnes and the ability to operate from challenging temporary or unpaved runways, the C-390 Millennium offers unparalleled versatility and robust performance in demanding environments. This aircraft represents a critical asset for national defence and international humanitarian efforts, embodying adaptability and efficiency in its design.

The proposed industrialization program, involving a strategic partnership between Embraer and Mahindra, signals a significant development in the global aerospace landscape. This collaboration aims to synergize Embraer’s extensive expertise in aerospace engineering and aircraft manufacturing with Mahindra’s well-established manufacturing capabilities and deep integration within the Indian industrial ecosystem. Such a partnership could create a powerful manufacturing hub, fostering innovation, generating employment, and contributing significantly to the “Make in India” initiative. The continued engagement with the Government of India, the Indian aerospace ecosystem, and the Government of Maharashtra underscores the strategic importance and national implications of this program.

Embraer, a global aerospace powerhouse headquartered in Brazil, brings a rich legacy of innovation and excellence to this collaboration. Since its inception in 1969, Embraer has delivered over 9,000 aircraft, underscoring its prolific production capabilities. With an average of one Embraer-manufactured aircraft taking off every 10 seconds and over 145 million passengers transported annually, the company’s global footprint and operational scale are undeniable. As a leading commercial jet manufacturer with up to 150 seats and Brazil’s primary exporter of high-value-added goods, Embraer’s expertise in design, development, manufacturing, and post-sales support is a cornerstone of its success. Its global presence, encompassing industrial units, offices, service, and parts distribution centers across multiple continents, solidifies its position as a key player in the aerospace industry.

Complementing Embraer’s aerospace prowess is the Mahindra Group, a multinational federation of companies with a profound impact across various sectors. Founded in 1945, Mahindra has grown into an organization with over 327,000 employees in more than 100 countries. It holds leadership positions in farm equipment, utility vehicles, information technology, and financial services in India and is, notably, the world’s largest tractor company by volume. Mahindra’s diverse portfolio extends to renewable energy, agriculture, logistics, hospitality, and real estate, demonstrating a broad and robust industrial capability. The group’s strong commitment to leading ESG globally, fostering rural prosperity, and enhancing urban living aligns with a broader vision of driving positive change for communities and stakeholders, encapsulated in its goal to “Rise.”

This strategic alliance between Embraer and Mahindra, while subject to the inherent risks and uncertainties of forward-looking statements—including governmental approvals and definitive agreements—represents a forward-thinking approach to aerospace manufacturing and collaboration. It highlights a shared vision for leveraging complementary strengths to potentially deliver advanced aerospace solutions. The potential for the C-390 Millennium program, driven by this industrial partnership, to contribute to both national security and economic development in India underscores its profound significance.
