ATA Champions Air Travellers’ Rights: A Bold Step Toward Affordable Flying In Delhi

By Staff Correspondent

The skies over Delhi may soon become friendlier for air travellers, thanks to the untiring efforts of the Air Travelers Association (ATA). On May 13th, 2025, the ATA made headlines by bringing the pressing concern of high VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to the forefront, as they engaged with the Delhi government in a pivotal meeting. This move is nothing short of a beacon of hope for countless passengers who have felt the weight of soaring ticket prices in the national capital.

The seriousness of this issue was underscored by the gathering of key stakeholders—representatives from airports, airlines, and the ATA—all united with a single aim: to highlight how the current tax structure is imposing an avoidable strain on air travellers in Delhi. With each ticket purchased, travellers have unwittingly been contributing to a heavy tax burden, making air travel less accessible for many. ATA’s proactive approach in writing to the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister of Delhi has finally triggered the momentum needed for change.

During the meeting convened by the Department of Trade and Taxes, the ATA eloquently articulated the silent suffering of millions of passengers and articulated a clear solution: rationalization of ATF taxes. Such a step would not only ease the financial pressure on air travellers but would also fuel the growth of Delhi’s aviation industry. Lower ATF taxes make it feasible for airlines to pass on savings directly to customers, thereby democratizing travel and enhancing connectivity.

G.S. Bawa, Secretary General of ATA, summed up the association’s unwavering resolve: “ATA is committed to advocating for the rights and interests of air travellers. We believe that rationalizing ATF taxes will not only benefit passengers but also contribute to the growth of the aviation industry in Delhi. We appreciate the Delhi government’s willingness to engage with stakeholders and look forward to a favourable resolution.” These words resonate as a call to action—not just for government officials, but for all stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem to prioritize the needs of the traveling public.

The outcome of this meeting marks a significant milestone. For the first time, there is a sense of true collaboration among government officials, airlines, airports, and passenger representatives. ATA has vowed to maintain the momentum, working hand in hand with all concerned parties to ensure that air travel remains affordable and accessible for everyone.

ATA’s steadfast advocacy shines as an example of collective action and public-spirited leadership. With such initiatives paving the way, the future of flying from Delhi looks increasingly bright for passengers and the aviation sector alike. Travelers can rest assured that their voices are being heard, and better days are truly on the horizon.
